paul m hickman inc.Paul is the one-man-show of a business that designs personalized furniture, consults on “green” building materials and rounds it off by producing multi-layered polychromatic decorative paint finishes. Paul often works with architects, general contractors and other designers.
Personal Design as a First Choice — Not a Last Resort
More than a few clients have found their way to Paul after failing to find what they were looking for in stores with mass-produced product lines. Paul believes that “two benefits of thinking local first are discovering above-average service and unique goods — and that’s what personal design is all about!”
By truly listening to his clients’ needs and getting to know their aesthetics, Paul is able to deliver meaningful, original designs; one project, for example, incorporated a map of the Battle of Shilo etched on the glass of a cabinet for a client's collection of Civil War books. As with his design services, Paul’s decorative finishes get developed through understanding what clients like — or don’t like — about a space, enhancing positive aspects of the space while diminishing any negative aspects.
Thinking Local as a Commitment to the Environment
Most of Paul’s materials are obtained within a 100-mile radius of his studio and are reclaimed or from a sustainable source. He also specializes in non-toxic and petroleum-free finishes. Paul chooses these materials because he believes that “it is the best way for me to make a direct and immediate impact upon my community while providing a one-of-a-kind service that is reflective of our local story.”
Ann Arbor as a Place to Put Down Roots
The Hickmans moved to Ann Arbor to be closer to family. Now with two sons, they think Ann Arbor is a great place to grow a family and a business — and perhaps even a family business: Paul has been making art with elder son Charlie. Paul is grateful to the Ann Arbor community for supporting his success at making a living at what he loves to do!
