Edible landscaping

A man from Pasco County says there are many benefits to edible landscaping, and even those with a “brown thumb” can do it.

SPRING HILL, Florida. – Through his YouTube channel, Pete Kanaris teaches his thousands of followers how to turn their gardens into food forests.

“By edible landscaping, you know, when I figured out that you could actually plant things that you could eat, it was like someone turned on the lights for me,” Kanaris explained. “I had been planting plants that didn’t make sense for a long time, you know, things that we prune just to watch them and we started to branch out with things that you can eat… from edible flowers to edible fruit.”

Kanaris owns GreenDreams, a company specializing in ecological landscaping.

“We realize that not everyone will be able to afford our service. So our idea is to give everyone the tools they need to do it at home. We show you how to do it from step one to step one. last stage of the plants being in the ground. So we’re really trying to give this education for free, you know, to spread the knowledge, to teach people, to show them how exciting it can be to go out and plant things ” Kanaris said.

He can literally eat in his garden.

“When you look at the woods, they are very self-taught to talk to each other. They are very diverse. There are all types of species. There is leaf litter, there are nitrogen fixing plants.

There is no watering. There’s no fertilizer, you know, so our systems mimic nature, everything we see in nature, ”Kanaris explained.
And some of these plants serve additional purposes.

“If you look at elderberry syrup online, it’s just a potent drug, a potent plant for the benefit of predatory insects and just a good thing to have on the landscape,” Kanaris explained.

He added, “It’s not just about feeding us. It’s about feeding beneficial and predatory insects. So we’re not just planting things to feed us. We’re planting things that will bring bees, the butterflies. “

Kanaris has also started making TikToks to educate the younger generation.

“One of the main reasons I got into this business was that I have a young child and wanted something that would make me sleep a little better at night, you know, and if we want to fix a tree , we don’t “start at the top. We start with the roots. And then I look at the children as the future. They are the roots. So, you know, playing with this TikTok audience, getting that crowd excited has been something amazing for us, ”Kanaris commented.

He has established fans across the world, including celebrities.

“You know I get emails. Of course. India, China, Africa, Greece, Mexico. People like Will Smith, Snoop Dogg, most recently Jenny McCarthy commented on one of my videos and she asked us if we would like to go out to California, ”says Kanaris.

He said there are three things to keep in mind when starting out.

“Mulch being number one. A good plan would be number two and number three, starting in that area one, start near your house. You know, whether it is an area, a vegetable patch, a herb garden. aromatics and come out. Don’t start too big, too fast, “Kanaris said.

His growing audience grows with him.

“There’s no comparison. Once you’ve planted this tree and tasted this fruit, you can’t go back to the grocery store and buy a store-bought banana. So it’s really a connection. amazing once you gave people these tools, they tried them, they planted them themselves, ”explained Kanaris.
